DIAGNOSTIC METHODS: Direct Wet Examinations

What is the purpose of the direct wet examination?

This procedure is designed to allow the viewer to detect motile protozoa; this procedure should not be performed on preserved specimens and should be reserved for fresh stool specimens that are very soft or liquid. It is not necessary to perform a direct wet examination on formed stool.
