ISOLATION AND CULTURE MEDIA |

Yeast Extract Phosphate
Yeast Extract Phosphate (YXP) Medium (syn. Smith's Medium) has been shown to be superior to other media for the primary isolation of systemic fungi from contaminated specimens (i.e. sputum, bronchial washings, ulcer scrapings, tissue homogenates, etc.). The recovery rate for Histoplasma on YXP was between 85-95% and SabHi, the next highest with a recovery rate of 50-70% from sputum. YXP is a selective for the following organisms: Histoplasma capsulatum, H. duboisii, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Coccidioides immitis, Sporothrix schenckii, Cryptococcus neoformas, and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.
YXP is not satisfactory for the routine cultivation of organisms such as: Candida sp., Aspergillus sp., or Penicillium sp.; in fact, the medium is inhibitory for these organisms.
