The Latex-Cryto
Antigen Detection System is a simple and rapid latex agglutination
test for the qualitative and semi-quantitative detection of the
capsular polysaccharide antigens of Cryptococcus neoformans in serum
and cerbrospinal fluid (CSF). Cryptococcal antigen is frequently
present in the serum of patients with pulmonary cryptococcosis and
in the CSF and serum of patients with central nervous system involvement.
Currently, almost
50% of all cryptococcosis cases occur in HIV positive individuals.
Other than AIDS patients, cryptococcosis occurs in normal individuals
(rarely) and in subjects with impaired immune systems due to:
1) undelying diseases such as lupus erythematosis, sarcoidosis,
leukemia, lymphoma and Cushman's Disease; 2) immuno suppressive
therapies such as corticostreroids, cytotoxic drugs and transplantation
therapies.
Since its introduction
by IMMY in 1982, Detacher Enzyme (DE), Pronase®, has proven
to be a vital component. DE digests antibodies in immune complexes
(the antigen is not affected), which can mask the detection of
antigens. DE also eliminates rheumatoid factor, which can cause
false positives.
